Sharjah 24: Engineer Hind Nasser, Director of the Human Resources and Finance Department at the Sharjah Department of Public Works (SDPW), highlighted the vital role of women in the department, noting that 148 female employees currently serve across various roles. Of these, 54 are engineers, representing nearly 50% of the department’s total workforce. This reflects the department’s commitment to empowering women and recognising their excellence in both administrative and supervisory roles.

Leadership, training, and empowerment

Nasser affirmed that under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the department is committed to offering training and development programmes to support female employees. Women currently hold over 66% of leadership positions in the department, illustrating their significant role in shaping the department’s success and Sharjah’s broader development goals.

Support for women in all fields

The department continues to champion the Sharjah Government’s vision of empowering women socially, economically, and professionally. It remains committed to supporting women as active partners in the nation-building journey, contributing meaningfully to sustainable development alongside their male colleagues.

Breaking barriers in engineering fields

Emirati female engineers at the department have entered traditionally male-dominated fields such as sanitation, industrial, and electrical engineering. These women have taken on demanding fieldwork roles—including infrastructure inspections and project construction—and proven their capabilities, earning senior positions and gaining widespread respect.

National progress through inclusion

The engineers emphasized that, under the UAE’s leadership, Emirati women have overcome societal and professional barriers to become key players in sustainable development. Their success spans fields including civil, electrical, architectural, industrial, and computer engineering, taking on roles from project design to implementation and management. Many have risen to become project managers, showcasing the depth of their contributions.

A model for female leadership

Today, a large number of Emirati women occupy prestigious positions within the Sharjah Public Works Department. Their presence and achievements reflect the broader national vision of gender inclusion and empowerment, and their stories stand as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to building a balanced, pioneering society where women continue to lead and thrive.
