Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Directorate of Town Planning and Survey (SDTPS) organised an introductory workshop for a its employees aimed at introducing the concept of urban dominance of central cities and the role of planning concepts in understanding the nature of a balanced urban system.
Dubbed "Urban Dominance and Rank – Size Rule”, the workshop also aims to benefit from the competencies of the directorate’s employees in spreading the occupational culture among the various departments and specialisations.
The workshop focused on to identify the concept of the central city in the urban system where the economic, cultural and administrative empowerments are concentrated, as well as introducing the concept of urban systems and their economic and social components.
During the introductory workshop, Dr. Eng. Mohammed Mahdi Al Tayeb, planning consultant at the SDTPS, reviewed the Rank – Size Rule, as a theoretical model to express the relationship between the observed and experimental regularity in the sizes of cities and the mechanisms for accelerating the spatial spread of investments to enhance the effectiveness of the urban system and the importance of interaction among cities, to achieve a sound and healthy urban planning.
He pointed out that clarifying the concept of urban dominance and using the Rank – Size Rule contributes to understanding the balance between cities in urban systems, and helps to understand the requirements, paths and directions of development cities in the long run, and then formulate the visions, goals and future strategies for cities.
