Engineer Ali Sultan bin Butti Al Muhairi, the Director of the Sharjah Department of Town Planning and Survey, attended the events along with various officials, employees, and visitors.
The festivities kicked off with a workshop called “Urban Planning Between Local Identity and Global Vision,” led by expert Stephen Goldie from the Emirates Planning Association. This workshop covered important themes like sustainable development and how cities can evolve while maintaining their unique character. It also offered a chance for professionals to share their insights and stay updated on the latest trends in urban planning.
Another workshop focused on the “More Beautiful Residential Neighborhoods” initiative, presented by Ibrahim Al Jarwan, the Director of the Urban Appearance Department. He outlined the goals of this initiative, which aims to improve the look of residential areas and encourage the community to appreciate and maintain their neighborhoods. The initiative also guides property owners and developers in creating attractive and environmentally friendly designs.
A highlight of the event was the opening of the Urban Planning Exhibition, which featured three innovative projects showcasing how urban planning is evolving in Sharjah. One notable project is the "Al Mahatta" area plan in Kalba, covering nearly 278,000 square meters. This initiative aims to turn the area into a sustainable urban space that reflects its historical significance. The project focuses on celebrating the area's heritage by restoring landmarks like the old airstrip, the fort, mosques, and former military buildings. It combines traditional elements with modern design while ensuring that sustainability remains at the forefront.
The plan will also develop pathways that connect historical sites, improve local roads, and enhance the overall urban landscape, creating new opportunities for investment.
The exhibition wrapped up with a showcase of building plans available on the Department of Town Planning and Survey's website, featuring over 200 three-dimensional designs along with more than 160 models for different types of residential extensions. These designs cater to various family needs and aim to simplify the process of obtaining necessary permits for building homes, reflecting Sharjah’s vision of sustainable urban planning that balances development with the preservation of local culture.
