The opening ceremony was attended by Issa Hilal Al Hazami, Chairman of the Sharjah Sports Council.
Al Hazami stated that "Sharjah Chess" has become an icon in chess and one of the world's respected clubs.
He stated that the club plays a significant role in popularising the game in the UAE's clubs by organising big tournaments for the last two years and scouting potential talents.
Along with Al Hazami, the opening ceremony was attended by Sheikh Saud bin Abdulaziz, Vice President of the International Chess Federation, President of the Arab Chess Federation and President of Sharjah Cultural and Chess Club; Sheikh Khalid bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Vice President of Sharjah Cultural and Chess Club; Tarim Matar, President of the UAE Chess Federation; and others.
200 players representing 30 countries have been participating in the championship, including 30 world-renowned champions. The tournament will continue until Tuesday.
