Sharjah 24: Sharjah Police, in less than eight hours from receiving the report, has arrested a phisher specialised in fraud, after trying to seize AED2.8 million.
In detail, Lt. Col. Mohammed bin Haider, acting head of the Al Buhairah Comprehensive Police Station, explained that they had received a report at dawn on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at exactly three o'clock in the morning, from the director of one of the advertising companies operating in the emirate, stating that the company's account had been hacked, and the accused received AED1.1 million.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mohammed bin Haider indicated that the electronic phisher hacked the victim's electronic account, identified commercial transactions between the parties to his company, and monitored a procedure based on transferring a sum of money of 2.8 million dirhams from a company in one of the Gulf countries, which led the perpetrator to write to that company by the official e-mail, and asked him to transfer the amount to another bank account under the pretext of changing the account, which prompted the Gulf company to approve the new account, and transfer the agreed amount to that account, thus the offender managed to seize the amount of AED1.1 million out of the amount he tried to seize in its entirety.

The Acting Head of Al Buhairah Comprehensive Police Station indicated that the suspect withdrew the estimated amount of AED1.1 million, through seven cash withdrawal transactions from several separate branches of banks in the emirate and abroad.

Accordingly, a team was formed from Al Buhairah Comprehensive Police Station, and criminal investigations departmet, to detect the suspect and arrest him before obtaining the rest of the money. His plans were thwarted when the police team caught him in flagrante delicto, and referred himto the Public Prosecution to complete the legal procedures.

The Acting Head of Al Buhairah Comprehensive Police Station called on the owners of companies and private institutions that adopt electronic systems in their transactions to ensure that these systems comply with the approved information security standards and specifications, to avoid falling into the trap of electronic intrusions, pointing to the importance of following up bank accounts, verifying the origin of banking transactions, and monitoring any suspicious or unfamiliar movement on the account, and the development of additional means to protect the accounts that prevent any transfers from being made before making sure that the exchange order was issued by the account holder himself.
