Sharjah 24: The Main Building of the University of Sharjah (UoS) has been awarded the title of "Age-Friendly Institution" as part of the first session of the Age-Friendly Initiative organised by the Sharjah Office for Age-Friendly Cities of the Department of Social Services in Sharjah.
The Initiative targets government and non-governmental entities in the Emirate of Sharjah to raise their preparedness and adapt their structures and services. This to serve seniors with different needs and abilities and enable them to easily access and benefit from their services. This according to the structural design of the building and its vitality, distinctive facilities and services, and social empowerment criteria.
Eng. Alain Eid, Director of Facilities Management and Planning Department at the University of Sharjah, signed a document to maintain the initiative standards. This during the meeting that took place in the main building of the University to hand over the mural from the Sharjah Age-Friendly Cities Office. Dr. Shareefa Al Marzooqi, Director of the Media Center at the University of Sharjah, attended along with Ms. Maha Mansour Al Ali, Director of the Government Communication Department at the Social Services Department in Sharjah; Ms. Aisha Hashem, Acting Director of the Sharjah Age-Friendly Cities Office, and General Supervisor of the Age-Friendly Cities Program; and the University's Facilities Management and Planning Department team.
For his part, Eng. Alain Eid expressed his gratitude to the Sharjah Age-Friendly Office for the opportunity to participate in this initiative and obtain the title of "Age-Friendly Institution." He added that this is not only a reward for the efforts of the team, but rather a commitment by the University of Sharjah to maintain its efforts to expand the application of the initiative’s standards to other buildings in the University.
For her part, Aisha Hashem said that the initiative aims to strengthen the membership of the Emirate of Sharjah in the global network of age-friendly cities. It supports the strategic plan of the Sharjah Age-Friendly Cities Program of creating a harmonious environment that meets the needs of seniors. It also works to raise community awareness of the best practices and programs provided to the elderly in the Emirate of Sharjah and highlighting the role of the participating institutions in the initiative with their age-friendly services.
Aisha Hashem added that the Sharjah Office awarded the University of Sharjah’s Main Building for passing 80% of the special criteria of the Age-Friendly Institutions Initiative. This initiative is an encouragement for all institutions to adopt the standards of age-friendly cities and implement all the initiatives and programs that contribute to supporting seniors.
