Sharjah 24: As part of its commitment to promoting public health and food safety, Al Hamriyah Municipality took part in "Al Nawakhedha" programme organised by Al Hamriyah Fishing Cooperative Society by delivering a specialised awareness workshop titled "Critical Control Points in Fishing and Fish Handling Operations."

The workshop targeted fishermen, students and hobbyists, with the aim of promoting best health practices in the fishing sector and raising awareness of the safety of seafood products from the moment they are caught until they reach consumers.

The workshop, delivered by specialists from the Public Health Department, covered a range of scientific and practical topics, including an introduction to critical control points in fishing operations, potential contaminants during the various stages of fish handling, requirements for storing fish on fishing vessels, and the relationship between time and temperature in maintaining the quality and safety of seafood products. It also examined the impact of natural phenomena, such as red tide, and environmental factors resulting from human activities, including oil spills, on fish stocks and food safety.

The municipality's participation in "Al Nawakhedha" programme reflects its commitment to supporting community initiatives aimed at preparing and developing a well-informed new generation of fishermen and promoting a culture of health awareness in one of the key sectors linked to food security and environmental sustainability, through its active partnerships with local institutions and authorities.

The workshop concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, which attracted strong engagement from participants and helped enrich their scientific knowledge while enhancing their ability to apply sound health requirements throughout the various stages of fishing and fish handling, thereby supporting the sustainability of fish stocks and maintaining the quality of seafood products across the emirate.

Mohammed Sultan bin Harib Al Muhairi, Deputy Director of the Public Health Department at Al Hamriyah Municipality, said the municipality's participation in "Al Nawakhedha" programme reflects its approach to strengthening institutional integration with various national entities and utilising its specialist expertise in service of the community. He noted that the workshop represents a preliminary step towards preparing a specialised health guide incorporating best practices and health requirements related to fishing and fish handling operations, helping to raise awareness and promote a culture of prevention and food safety among those working in, and interested in, the sector.

Al Muhairi added that Al Hamriyah Municipality is committed to ensuring its awareness programmes are based on scientific and practical foundations, enabling participants to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to maintain the quality and safety of seafood products and support the sustainability of the fishing sector, in line with the vision of the Emirate of Sharjah to protect public health and preserve marine resources.
