Sharjah 24: Dibba Al Hisn Municipality launched its annual "Jood Al Saaf" initiative to celebrate the arrival of the date season and the beginning of summer, reflecting the authenticity of Emirati heritage and the values of social solidarity. The initiative involved distributing “Rutab” harvested from the city's palm trees to government institutions, strengthening community ties.

The municipality cares for hundreds of palm trees distributed throughout Dibba Al Hisn, and this season's agricultural plans have yielded abundant crops of various varieties, most notably "Khunaizi" and "Shahla." This step comes within the framework of the UAE's interest in the palm sector as a vital sector and a resource for food security.

Ensuring the continuity of “Jood Al Saaf” heritage in the face of climate challenges

The municipality continues its efforts in combating agricultural pests and implementing modern technologies to improve crop quality, ensuring the continuity of this heritage in the face of climate challenges and transforming the city into a model to be emulated in sustainable agricultural development.

His Excellency Talib Abdullah Al Yahyai, Director of Dibba Al Hisn Municipality, explained that the “Jood Al Saaf” initiative has become an annual tradition reflecting the municipality’s commitment to strengthening ties with the community, instilling authentic Emirati values, and raising awareness of the importance of the agricultural heritage represented by the date palm.

Caring for palm trees and maintaining green spaces

Al Yahyai noted that the abundant date harvests this season is a result of the ongoing efforts of the Agriculture and Parks Department in caring for palm trees and maintaining green spaces, which has contributed to the success of agricultural plans and the achievement of outstanding production.

In this context, Khadija Najib Al Nuaimi, Director of the Agriculture and Parks Department at the municipality, affirmed that crop diversification contributes to supporting local self-sufficiency in dates. She pointed out that expanding date palm cultivation is a key pillar of agricultural sustainability plans, given the palm tree’s role in maintaining ecological balance, protecting the soil, and mitigating rising temperatures, thus enhancing food security and the city’s ability to cope with climate change.
