Sharjah 24: In line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to prioritise the marine environment and work to protect and develop it to preserve it for future generations, the implementation of the "Khorfakkan Reef" project reflects the true partnership and fruitful cooperation between the public and private sectors to achieve the strategic goals and ambitious vision of the United Arab Emirates in general and the Emirate of Sharjah in particular.

Environmental survey

Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, in cooperation with a specialised company, conducted, on Friday, a detailed environmental survey of the seabed at a vital site in Khorfakkan. This survey is a fundamental step within the framework of "Khorfakkan Reef" pilot project, with the aim of studying the effectiveness of artificial caves in providing safe and attractive habitats for marine organisms and analysing their environmental impact on the local marine ecosystem.

Enhancing fisheries sustainably

Through this project, the Authority also seeks to develop innovative solutions that contribute to enhancing fisheries in a sustainable manner.

Enhancing marine life

Ali Ahmed Abu Ghazin, Chairman of the Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, stated that the "Khorfakkan Reef" project will provide diverse environments to attract fish and enhance marine life.

Partnering with international institutions

Abu Ghazin stated that in 2024, the Authority partnered with the international contracting company, HaejooX, to study the project for a year. Following a comprehensive review of global best practices, the study analysed the effectiveness of marine reefs designed for this purpose in the Emirate of Sharjah. The study relied on advanced technologies using a 3D scanning system to understand the quantities and types of fish present, with preliminary data providing a clear comparison of the extent of future marine life expansion upon the project's completion.
