The event, organised by the Sharjah International Marine Sports Club, took place on Khorfakkan Beach on Friday afternoon.
The opening ceremony began with the UAE national anthem, followed by a speech from His Excellency Khalid Jassim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah International Marine Sports Club. Al Midfa emphasized that the festival is more than just an event; it is a celebration of marine culture and heritage, reflecting the UAE's rich history. He highlighted the importance of the festival in strengthening Sharjah’s position in preserving cultural identity, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
Al Midfa added that the festival offers a unique opportunity for visitors to enjoy thrilling marine sports, traditional handicrafts, and cultural activities, all of which showcase Khorfakkan’s vibrant heritage. He also welcomed the participation of eight countries, noting their contributions to enhancing the festival and fostering international cooperation.
The festival's opening included performances such as "Pearls in the Heart of the Emirates" by Sajaya Girls of Sharjah, and an operetta titled "Simulating Marine Life in the City of Khorfakkan." Following the ceremony, Sheikh Saeed bin Saqr Al Qasimi toured the festival's pavilions, which featured displays of traditional industries, marine museums, and heritage food and industrial products.
The second edition of the Khorfakkan Marine Festival will run until January 5, 2025, offering a variety of events, including traditional marine crafts, shipbuilding, net spinning, and gargoor making. The festival also features fishing competitions, the UAE Shawahif Championship, and the Formula 4 Championship, alongside modern and Olympic rowing and kayaking events.
