SAASST Celebrates Graduation of 2024 Summer Internship Students

Sharjah24: The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST), affiliated with the University of Sharjah (UoS), has graduated 50 university students who successfully completed SAASST’s internship program across its main departments. The internship program aims to enhance students’ knowledge, skills, and capabilities using advanced technologies, and prepare them for their future career endeavors.
On this occasion, Prof. Mashhoor Al-Wardat, Professor of Astrophysics at UoS and Director of Academic Affairs at SAASST, emphasized the Academy’s commitment to providing students from different backgrounds with hands-on experience using advanced technologies to develop their scientific abilities. He highlighted that the Academy offers a unique opportunity for students to utilize cutting-edge capabilities, tools, and technologies while facilitating their professional growth. He also praised the efforts of the Academy’s Internship Committee, as the Academy staff worked diligently to organize a comprehensive experience for all interns and provide all necessary requirements to ensure the success of the internship period. He also stated that the academy received a number of outstanding projects during the presentations, including the technical maintenance and development of optical telescopes, the development of a designated application for the Academy, the reorganization and archiving of meteorite collection records, and many other projects that were of a high level of professionalism. These projects reflect the great efforts made by the interns and confirm the quality of the internship and guidance they received from the supervisors

Internship students expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the Academy for the continuous support provided throughout the internship program’s duration, which was a comprehensive program that met all the requirements of students’ scientific disciplines. Student Hiba Ahmed Hilmy stated that the Academy provided a dynamic environment, where they worked on scientific projects in the fields of space sciences and astronomy under the supervision of specialists and engineers. They were also trained on using scientific laboratory devices, analyzing samples, and distinguishing between meteorites and other terrestrial rocks. Student Khaled Mansour Al Hammadi pointed out that the experiences he gained during his internship at the Academy’s Sharjah Planetarium will undoubtedly contribute to his future endeavours as a space sciences enthusiast.

The Academy provided technical support to students through scientific laboratories equipped with educational tools and modern technologies. Student Moza Ahmed Al Ketbi praised the role of supervisors at the Academy in providing assistance, exchanging knowledge and theoretical and practical experience, and answering all inquiries raised by interns. Student Omar Al Hammadi stated that the Academy provided an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the Astronomical Observatories Department, where they were trained on observing celestial bodies and astronomical phenomena using advanced telescopes while obtaining data for scientific research and projects.

SAASST is committed to providing students with the scientific skills needed to enhance their expertise during their academic journey. Several students outlined the skills they acquired, including programming and artificial intelligence applications, techniques for processing astronomical images, observing and analyzing meteorite impacts on the Moon's surface, in addition to research writing skills and using specialized software to create shows for the Sharjah Planetarium.
