Sharjah24: To raise awareness about asteroids and their impact on Earth, the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST) of the University of Sharjah (UoS), celebrated the International Asteroid Day, a global event held annually on June 30. The celebration saw the attendance of researchers, students, and space enthusiasts.
Prof. Mashhoor Al-Wardat, Professor of Astrophysics at UoS and Director of Academic Affairs at SAASST, welcomed attendees, highlighting the Academy’s commitment to organizing such events and activities that inspire individuals to explore various fields within astronomy and space sciences. Professor Al-Wardat emphasized that hosting this event aligns with the global attention on this topic. The International Astronomical Union has designated June 30 as World Asteroid Day to raise awareness about safeguarding Earth from potential threats. This date was chosen to commemorate the Tunguska asteroid event in Siberia in 1908.

The workshop featured scientific lectures and activities. Mr. Mohammed Rihan, Research Analyst in the Space Sciences Department at SAASST, presented a lecture titled “Asteroid and Space Debris” addressing types of space debris and their impact on Earth. Student Mariam Yassin, an intern at the Astronomical Observatories Department at SAASST, spoke about the Tunguska Event.

Alongside the workshop, attendees explored space exhibitions at SAASST, and enjoyed a special movie at the Sharjah Planetarium titled “Stars”.  An engaging contest was also held, followed by announcing winners for the SAASST Asteroid Day Article Competition.
