UoS students achieve advanced results in IFOM

Sharjah24: The results achieved by students of the College of Medicine at the University of Sharjah (UoS) who are participating in the International Foundation of Medicine Exam (IFOM) conducted throughout the year by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) in the United States, showed that their average grades were more than 30% higher than the rate of student achievement internationally. In addition, the results also indicated that more than 20 students achieved scores above 80%.
This year, 124 students from the final year of the college took the IFOM clinical science exam, and 145 third-year students took the IFOM  basic science exam, among several thousand students from different countries around the world from America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Professor Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah congratulated his students on this great achievement, which confirms the continuous keenness of the University of Sharjah to prepare its students from various disciplines and academic programs in accordance with the best practices and standards accredited internationally. He pointed out the university’s keenness to attract the best scholars and faculty members distinguished at various scientific and practical levels, which contributes to achieving the university’s strategy, that aims to prepare and qualify graduates for the job market that is constantly changing and evolving. 

For his part, Prof. Qutayba Hamid, Vice Chancellor for Medical Colleges and Health Sciences, and Dean of College of Medicine, stated that the university is constantly keen on the participation of its students in these specialized international tests, which assists medical colleges around the world to benchmark and identify student’s basic knowledge and clinical skills, as well as compare their performance with the international standards and practices . He added that the results achieved by university students this year reflects the efforts of faculty members and administrative staff in the college in preparing and qualifying students scientifically and practically based on the best international practices and standards.

It is noteworthy that the NBME founded in 1915, in the United States of America, develops and manages the assessment of Clinicians and healthcare professionals through the International Foundation of Medicine (IFOM) exams, and is known for its role in developing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) in cooperation with the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB). The exams of USMLE are also used for medical students and residents by medical licensing authorities in the United States to help determine qualifications to grant and recognize medical licenses. NBME also creates assessments and materials that are used by medical students, medical educators, practicing physicians, and for state testing of physicians already holding licenses.
