Sharjah 24: The Arab Cultural Club in Sharjah held a discussion about the book “Al-Wafi fi Tarikh Al-Masrah fi Al-Sudan” by Dr. Youssef Aidabi. This book was published by the Arab Theater Institute. The session featured theater critics Musab Al-Sawi and Essam Abu Al-Qasim, along with the author, Ali Al-Mughni, who is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Club. Many theater enthusiasts and intellectuals also attended.

Dr Youssef Aidabi is a writer, director, theater critic, and cultural activist, earned his PhD in Theater History and Theory in 1979. He is a prominent figure in the cultural and theatrical scenes of Sudan and the UAE. He has made significant contributions to cultural and theatrical movements in both countries through a range of works, frameworks, and initiatives.

Musab Al-Sawi talked about Dr. Youssef's book “Al-Wafi fi Tarikh Al-Masrah fi Al-Sudan.” He described it as a collection about the history of Sudanese theater. Preparing the book required a solid grasp of its growth, trends, and key figures. He plays an important role in Sudanese theater and advocates for a theater that appreciates pluralism and cultural diversity in Sudan.

Al-Sawi pointed out that “Al-Wafi” combines traditional and modern elements, presenting rich collection and diversity reminiscent of significant historical literary works. The book provides more than just a basic biography of theater; it features contextual footnotes that reflect current ideas and societal values; the approach includes comparison, checking sources, and modern critical analysis. It connects various periods of Sudanese theater to their social contexts for a deeper understanding.

Essam Abu Al-Qasim emphasized the importance of “Al-Wafi.” He called it the most important reference for Sudanese theater. He praised its publication by the ATI, which ensures that researchers throughout the Arab world can easily access it, and also promotes Sudanese theater.

He pointed out that Dr. Youssef Aidabi is notable for not just gathering materials but also for raising important questions and proposing new ways to view Sudanese theater history. His method provides a clear timeline that includes imported theater, the Renaissance, seasonal theater, and critical efforts. The book also fills a documentary gap and is especially important considering the current war's damage to Sudanese cultural memory.
