Sharjah 24: In an atmosphere of enthusiasm and a spirit of challenge, the second edition of the University Cup for Basketball and Volleyball concluded. The tournament, organised by the Sharjah Women's Sports Foundation (SWSF) in cooperation with the American University of Sharjah (AUS), was sponsored by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) and sponsored by Sharjah Cooperative Society and Beeah.

The competition lasted from October 13 to 22, with the participation of 197 female students from several universities and colleges across the country, including the American University of Sharjah, Al Qasimia University, the University of Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates University, the Canadian University in Dubai, Westford University College, Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), and the Bath Spa University Academic Centre in Ras Al Khaimah.

Outstanding performance

The tournament combined outstanding athletic performance with a remarkable audience turnout, offering a competitive experience filled with enthusiasm and team spirit, in line with the Sharjah Women's Sports Foundation's vision to instil a culture of sports as a way of life in academic circles.

The tournament also provided a stimulating platform for female students, combining the joy of sports with the spirit of youthful initiative. It encouraged regular participation in sports activities, contributing to the discovery of national talent and the building of an ambitious university generation that believes in the values of teamwork and positive challenge.

University of Sharjah wins the basketball and volleyball titles

In the basketball competition, the University of Sharjah team won first place after a distinguished performance and a remarkable turnout in the final matches. The American University of Sharjah came in second, and the Bath Spa University Academic Centre in Ras Al Khaimah finished third after a strong match that reflected the advanced level of the participating university teams.

In volleyball, the University of Sharjah continued its brilliance by winning first place, followed by Bath Spa Academic University in Ras Al Khaimah in second place, while the American University of Sharjah came in third after exciting matches characterized by enthusiasm and high sportsmanship.

Promoting university sports

Noura Al Hamar, Head of Community Events at SWSF, emphasised that the University Cup Championship falls within the Foundation's mandate to spread the culture of sports as a lifestyle and enhance community participation in academic circles. She stated that the University Cup Championship represents a community initiative that embodies the Foundation's vision of making sports an essential part of female students' daily lives and instilling the values of teamwork and positive challenge within universities.

Through these championships, SWSF is keen to build sustainable partnerships with educational institutions, contributing to expanding the base of female athletes, discovering promising talents, and honing their skills in various sports.

SWSF believes that sports is not just a competition, but rather an integrated lifestyle that enhances the spirit of belonging, responsibility, and teamwork, and stimulates positive participation among female students both on and off campus.

This championship also represents an important platform for encouraging girls to engage in sports with confidence and passion, and to acquire leadership and organizational skills that contribute to building their personalities and developing their future capabilities.

Through this event, the foundation seeks to highlight the role of Emirati women in the field of sports and support Continuing their participation in various forums, in line with the Emirate of Sharjah's vision to empower women and enhance their presence in all fields, especially in the sports sector, which is a pillar of sustainable community development.

Suzan Saleh, coach of the American University of Sharjah team, expressed her enthusiasm for the competitive atmosphere of the tournament, saying that the atmosphere was full of enthusiasm and challenge, and everyone was striving to achieve victory. Tournaments like these encourage students to make sports a part of their lifestyle and daily routine, and instil in them the values of commitment and teamwork."

Aisha Al Alili, player on the American University of Sharjah basketball team, said that this tournament gave the university a unique experience that combined challenge and familiarity among students from different universities. Competing in such an encouraging atmosphere makes the team even more passionate about developing skills and continuing to play at a higher level.

Safia Idris, from Al Qasimia University volleyball team, also expressed her pride in participating in the tournament for the first time, saying that the team id proud to represent the university in a tournament that brings together so many women's teams. The matches were intense and full of enthusiasm, and most importantly, the team gained new experience in team play and discipline on the court.

A unified vision

Her Excellency Moza Al Shamsi, Director of SWSF, emphasised that the championship falls within the framework of the foundation's ongoing efforts to enrich the sports sector in educational institutions and enhance the presence of sports in university life. She said that the foundation believes that building a sports community begins at the school level. Educational institutions are the first nucleus for discovering talent and creating champions.

Through these championships, SWSF works to instil a culture of regular exercise and encourage girls to make sports a part of their lifestyle, within a stimulating university environment that supports their ambitions and showcases their capabilities.

The Foundation, in cooperation with its partners and sponsors, has also been keen to provide cash prizes to the top-place winners in appreciation of their efforts and to encourage further participation and positive competition in future seasons.

These initiatives represent a fundamental step toward empowering women in sports and consolidating Sharjah's position as a leading centre for supporting and developing women's sports.

For her part, Shaima Bin Taliah, Vice Chancellor for Student Experience at the AUS, emphasised the importance of cooperation. She stated that the university is proud to continue its collaboration with SWSF in hosting the University Basketball and Volleyball Championship. The atmosphere of the tournament and the spirit of fair competition embodied the growing momentum of women's sports in the UAE and AUS shared commitment to empowering female athletes and providing an environment that supports their ambitions for excellence, leadership, and inspiration. The American University of Sharjah believes that sports are an essential part of the educational experience. They develop self-confidence, discipline, and team spirit. These values are deeply rooted in the character of our students and reflected in their academic and professional careers and their service to the community.
