On Monday, His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, officially opened the ancient Al-Zubarah area in KhorFakkan.
According to Aisha Obaid Ghabesh, this historical site has been revitalised to serve as a vibrant hub showcasing the customs, traditions, crafts, and professions once practised by the region's residents — all in a lively atmosphere filled with heritage and community activities that preserve and pass down past stories.
Ghabesh stated that the neighbourhood includes the Craftsmen's House, the Craftswomen's House, and a Cultural Heritage Events Centre, which will hold a variety of traditional and manual activities, programmes, and workshops for both children and adults.
She added that the neighbourhood opens its doors on Monday evenings, allowing visitors to enjoy artistic and heritage performances as well as explore traditional homes made of local stone, clay, and palm fronds, all of which reflect the natural setting between mountains and sea.
The area has been designated as a site for Al-Zubarah inhabitants to come together and reconnect with their historical surroundings, demonstrate their traditional crafts and activities, and pass on their acquired knowledge to future generations. It will also function as a location for private and community gatherings.
