Sports minister: University Games a major sports milestone

Sharjah 24: His Excellency Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, the UAE's Minister of Sports, commended the University Games, the largest sporting event for higher education institutions in the UAE. He described it as a quantum leap in Emirati sports development, a platform for creating champions, and a vital step toward achieving the National Sports Strategy 2031.

Encouraging young athletes

During a visit to one of the women’s basketball competitions, Dr. Al Falasi met with players and encouraged them to continue performing at their best. He praised their spirit and commitment and emphasised the importance of such events in nurturing the next generation of athletes.

Supporting the UAE’s sports vision

His Excellency highlighted that the tournament reflects the UAE’s vision to build an integrated university sports system that enhances the country’s position as a regional and global sports hub. He also stressed the role of universities in identifying and refining athletic talent.

Tournament details and participation

The University Games feature 1,822 male and female athletes from 28 universities, competing in football, basketball, and volleyball. The tournament is organized by the Abu Dhabi Entertainment Company (ADEC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Sports, the UAE School and University Sports Federation, and with support from Solution+ and MBME Group.

Competitive rounds and upcoming finals

The qualifiers began in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah, with intense competition in the preliminary rounds, quarterfinals, and semifinals. The final matches will be held on April 19 and 20, followed by an award ceremony to honor the winners and celebrate sports excellence.
