Sharjah 24: The medical team at the Cardiac Centre at Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital, affiliated with the Emirates Health Services Corporation, was able to receive a 10-month-old infant with a hole in the heart ventricle.
He was transferred from Fujairah Hospital to undergo surgery in an unconventional manner, due to many health problems resulting from the perforation.
The doctors were able to perform successful open-heart surgery on the child and close the hole using a new technique, which is limited surgical intervention. This technique is considered an alternative to the traditional intervention based on creating an opening in the middle of the rib cage.
The team of doctors avoided performing the traditional surgery of cutting the breastbone, relying on performing the surgery by making a small incision under the child’s right arm, in which the surgery is hidden and not obvious in the future, and enables the child to live his life better, and the recovery stage is as this type of medical technology contributes to faster recovery after surgery, and reduces the patient's length of stay in the hospital to receive care.
Dr. Khaled Khalfan bin Sabt, Deputy Director for Technical Affairs at Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital, emphasised the competence of the medical team at the Cardiac Centre, in performing such an outstanding medical procedure, noting that the leadership of the Emirates Health Services Corporation had honoured the team of doctors participating in this is due to the fact that this surgery is considered one of the distinguished and innovative medical procedures, in such difficult cases for children, especially for young ages.
He praised the efforts of the work team at the Cardiac Centre, and the cooperation of all medical and technical staff in the various departments within the hospital, which played a distinguished role in the success of this operation, and contributed to reducing the suffering of the child and his family, which achieves the strategic objectives of the Emirates Health Services Corporation in providing the best health services to the public.
In turn, Dr. Hamza Al Nadi, consultant pediatric heart surgeon at the hospital, explained the great impact of such congenital defects on children, pointing out their great danger to the lives of infants, as the rate of children being born with such congenital heart defects reaches 1% of newborns, and in this case, the innovative medical procedure contributed to solving the child’s problem and shortening the recovery period, as the infant was able to leave the hospital on the third day of the operation.
