Sharjah24: The final evaluation phase was launched for the projects participating in the 11th cycle of Sharjah Sustainability Award (SSA). The award is organised annually by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) and has this year attracted the participation of 311 male and female students from universities, and the number of schools that participated in the award reached 196 public and private schools across UAE.
Experts from the Emirates Schools Establishment (ESE), Sharjah Private Education Authority, Sharjah Electricity, Water, Gas Authority (SEWA),Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, University of Sharjah, and the American University in Sharjah, Skyline University College, Arabic Language Protection Association, and Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park participated in the evaluation process.
Consolidate the principles of green economy and sustainable development
Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah said: "The Sharjah Sustainability Award is a distinguished environmental award focus is the implementation of a sustainable environmental project that propose practical solutions to contribute to the consolidation of the principles of green economy and sustainable development on the ground." It is characterised by its offering specific domains that targeting school students from the preparatory and secondary levels. It encourages students to contribute to implementing projects and present various innovations, that enhance the environmental sustainability in the UAE and enrich eco-friendly practices inside and outside educational institutions.
Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi pointed out that the project submissions are evaluated based on specific criteria, including the project motives and reasons, quality in terms of idea, importance, the procedural plan, and the project's link to aspects of sustainability. In addition, the criteria also include the indicators such as its benefits, challenges, and project aspects of excellence, modernity and innovation, and the outcomes of project implementation. The evaluation is carried out by experts with specialist knowledge in the various domains of the award.
The final stage of the nominated projects for the school category included virtual interviews on the "Zoom" platform. Projects evaluation continued over two weeks until the 22nd of March.
Organising an exhibition for the final evaluation of the nominated students' projects
The final stage of the university projects evaluation includes organizing an exhibition where the nominated students present their projects to the judging panel for each domain. The final exhibition of university projects is organised on April 12th in the Student Forum Hall at the University of Sharjah.
Different Domains of participation
The Green Schools category includes environmental innovator domain, the best environmental project in artificial intelligence, creative writing for short stories, sustainable environmental application projects to preserve the natural environment resources of water and energy, protection of biodiversity and reduction of pollution, and the rationalization of electric energy and water consumption domain. In addition to the domain of producing short environmental films that contribute to developing students’ skills and creative expression about the importance of ecological preservation and sustainability.
Implementation of distinguished projects
The award also targets university students by encouraging and developing their skills and urging them to implement outstanding projects in sustainable design and construction domain and artificial intelligence applications in sustainability, Future energy and emissions, environmental resources conservation and protection domain, In addition, the award encourages university students to engage in scientific research as part of a bachelor’s degree and postgraduate students for master’s and doctoral degrees to provide sustainable environmental solutions based on their findings to benefit the relevant community institutions.
