Sharjah 24: In recognition of its exceptional efforts in environmental conservation and the protection of geological heritage, the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) has been awarded first place in the Fujairah Award for Best Sustainable Mining Practices 2024.
This award, organised by the Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation, recognized EPAA as the Best Local Institution Supporting Geological Heritage. The award ceremony took place during the ninth Fujairah International Mining Forum, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, honored the winners across various categories at a prestigious event attended by distinguished guests.
Ongoing Initiatives and Projects for Biodiversity and Sustainability
Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), expressed pride in this notable achievement, adding to the EPAA’s track record of success in environmental protection and biodiversity preservation through diverse environmental projects and initiatives aligned with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. She highlighted that, since its establishment, EPAA has continuously developed and implemented a series of impactful activities and projects designed to ensure the sustainability of terrestrial, marine, and mountainous ecosystems.
Comprehensive Plans and Policies Supporting Geological Heritage
Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi further noted that EPAA has developed a set of strategic plans and policies to support geological heritage, dedicating efforts to preserve geological samples and fossils. These activities are overseen by specialized teams of researchers and geologists at the Natural History & Botanical Museum, which classifies and conserves scientifically significant samples. Additionally, Buhais Geology Park contains a collection of high-value fossils and rock samples. Emphasizing its commitment to international standards for geological heritage conservation, the EPAA's efforts have led to Sir Bu Nair Island being included in the Tentative List for World Natural Heritage Sites and recognized under the Ramsar Convention.
