Sharjah24: To highlight the efforts of the UAE and the Emirate of Sharjah in the field of astronomy and space sciences, the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology (SAASST) of the University of Sharjah (UoS) recently participated at the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation (SATI) conference, which lasted for six days (July 17-22, 2022). The Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) organized the event in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in the presence of many engineers and scientists from various international space agencies, universities, and companies specializing in space systems development.
Yousuf Faroukh, SAASST Research Engineer at the CubeSat Laboratory, presented a scientific paper reflecting the emirate's achievements and development. The paper discusses the design, testing, and validation of a space-based Improved X-Ray Detector that aims to observe the bright, hard X-ray sources in our Galaxy and the solar coronal holes and their effects on space weather. He also presented an introductory poster to discuss the development of a novel optical camera subsystem onboard Sharjah-Sat-1 CubeSat, consisting of two optical cameras, lenses, and sensors ready for commercial use and a dual camera subsystem onboard Sharjah-Sat-1. It is noteworthy that the camera subsystem will be used for remote sensing applications and capturing the city of Sharjah and other cities in the UAE.
