Sharjah 24: The sixth edition of the Mafraq Arabic Poetry Festival began, on Tuesday, at the Royal Cultural Centre in Amman, under the generous patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in the presence of a delegation from Sharjah's Cultural Department led by Abdulla Mohammed Al Owais, the department's chairman.
The ceremony was also attended by Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qasir, Director of the Cultural Affairs at the Cultural Department, Mohammed Al Buraiki, Director of the House of Poetry in Sharjah, Ahmed Ali Al Balushi, UAE Ambassador to Jordan, Hazza Al Barari, Secretary General of the Jordanian Ministry of Culture, Faisal Al Sarhan, Director of the House of Poetry in Mafraq, and a large audience of poetry fans in Jordan.
The ceremony started with the opening of Arabic calligraphy exhibition for the woks by a group of Jordanian calligraphers, followed by a tour of in the Sharjah Cultural Department's publications exhibition.
On behalf of the Jordanian Ministry of Culture, Hazza Al Barari welcomed the distinguished guests and expressed gratitude to the Sharjah Government, represented by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, for His Highness’s initiatives, which contributed significantly to the development of major cultural projects in the Emirate and throughout the Arab world.
Abdulla Mohammed Al Owais commended Jordan's Arabic poetry movement and the House of Poetry's role in Mafraq, thanked the Ministry of Culture for its continuous collaboration with the Sharjah Cultural Department, and conveyed His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah's greetings and best wishes to all attendees.
According to Faisal Al-Sarhan, director of Mafraq's House of Poetry, the initiative established by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, was and continues to be one of the most significant Arab cultural undertakings. He stated that the House of Poetry in Mafraq attracts cultural and media attention and he thanked Sharjah's Cultural Department for its continued interest in poetry houses around the Arab world.
A group of Jordanian poets presented excerpts from their impassioned, patriotic, and social poems, drawing applause from the audience, and the ceremony concluded with an artistic performance by the Naya Band.
