Sharjah24: University of Khorfakkan (UKF) is strengthening its international presence in marine and ocean sciences following the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding between the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) and France’s Mission NEPTUNE. The agreement opens new horizons for the University and its Sharjah Marine Science Research Centre (SMSRC) to collaborate with leading international institutions and initiatives in the field.
The Memorandum of Understanding focuses on cooperation in ocean observation and exploration, marine biodiversity monitoring, data integration, and the development of scientific standards. It also promotes capacity building, supports fellowship programmes and the exchange of scientists and expertise, and expands participation in international initiatives and events addressing the future of the oceans.

These partnerships hold particular significance for University of Khorfakkan. The University and Sharjah Marine Science Research Centre have been part of the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) since 2025, while UKF is a founding partner of France’s Mission NEPTUNE. This places the University in a strong position to benefit from collaboration with both initiatives and to develop joint international scientific programmes.

Professor Ali Hilal Alnaqbi, Chancellor of the University , affirmed that this development builds on the vision and support of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University , for scientific research and the protection of the marine environment. He noted that it also reflects the University’s commitment to expanding its international presence and establishing scientific partnerships that strengthen the regional and international standing of the Sharjah Marine Science Research Centre.

“We seek to leverage the University’s engagement with the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) and France’s Mission NEPTUNE to develop scientific initiatives that bring together international expertise, create broader opportunities for our researchers and students, and contribute to positioning Khorfakkan and the Emirate of Sharjah as a regional platform with global reach in marine and ocean sciences,” Professor Alnaqbi said.

University of Khorfakkan continues to advance its academic and research ecosystem and expand its areas of work in line with scientific and development priorities at both the local and global levels. Through these efforts, the University seeks to harness knowledge and scientific research to serve society, protect the environment, support sustainable development, strengthen its contribution to addressing global challenges, and help shape a more sustainable future.
