Egypt beat New Zealand to secure first World Cup victory

Sharjah24: Egypt secured their first victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3-1 comeback win over New Zealand at BC Place in Canada, in a Group G clash officiated by Emirati referee Omar Al Ali.

New Zealand took the lead in the 15th minute, but Egypt responded strongly in the second half, turning the match around.

Mostafa Abdel Raouf “Zico” levelled the score in the 58th minute, before Mohamed Salah put Egypt ahead with a second goal in the 67th. Mahmoud Trezeguet sealed the victory with Egypt’s third goal in the 82nd.

The win lifted Egypt to four points and to the top of Group G.

Iran sit second on two points, level with Belgium, after the two sides played out a goalless draw earlier in the day.
