Sharjah 24: The 2026 FIFA World Cup concludes on Sunday with a highly anticipated final between defending champions Argentina and Spain in New Jersey, in the presence of US President Donald Trump and amid a high-profile entertainment show.

After five weeks of competition and 104 matches played across three countries — Mexico, the United States and Canada — and featuring 48 teams for the first time, the World Cup will finally reveal its champion.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina are aiming to become the first team to win consecutive World Cup titles since Brazil in 1962, taking their total tally to four championships. Spain, meanwhile, are seeking their second title, led by teenage star Lamine Yamal after their first triumph at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The final will be the only match of the tournament attended by Trump.

The announced entertainment programme matches the scale of an exceptional World Cup. From Tom Cruise and Madonna to Justin Bieber, Shakira and BTS, the 80,000-capacity MetLife Stadium near New York will be transformed into a major stage before and during the match, which kicks off at 3pm local time (7pm GMT).

Organisers are closely monitoring smoke from wildfires in Canada, which has covered large areas of the US skies.

"This issue has been addressed, and we have a specialist from the National Weather Service stationed at FIFA headquarters there, so we are monitoring the situation closely," Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House World Cup Task Force, said during a media briefing.

On the sporting side, Spain captain Rodri said he expects a "physical" battle against Argentina and will attempt to ignore any potential "provocations".

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni urged fans to enjoy watching Messi lead his team in another World Cup final at the age of 39. Speaking about the former Barcelona player, who helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Scaloni said: "He has made history. He is a legend."

The third-place play-off between England and France was played without pressure and produced a 10-goal thriller, ending in a 6-4 victory that gave England their best World Cup finish since 1966 and moved France’s Kylian Mbappé to the top of the tournament’s all-time scoring charts.

France lost 2-0 to Spain in the semi-finals, while England surrendered their lead against defending champions Argentina and fell to a 2-1 defeat. As a result, both teams entered Saturday’s match with largely reserve line-ups.
