Sharjah24: Nestled within one of Sharjah’s most environmentally sensitive coastal areas, Kingfisher Retreat offers a model of low-impact tourism, placing nature at the heart of the visitor experience.

Developed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) as part of the Sharjah Collection, the retreat is set within Kalba’s mangrove ecosystem, where tourism development has been carefully designed to respect the area’s unique environmental characteristics.

Tourism shaped by nature

Kalba’s coastline is home to mangrove forests, tidal channels and protected habitats that support migratory birds, gazelles, marine species and sea turtles. Rather than treating nature as a backdrop, the retreat embeds environmental preservation in every aspect of its design and operation.

Sea turtle nesting areas in Kalba are protected and managed by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), with monitoring programmes to preserve suitable nesting conditions by limiting disturbance and reducing light pollution.

Low-impact design and development

Environmental sustainability remains a core principle of Sharjah’s development strategy, established with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

Kingfisher Retreat features 40 luxury tents designed to minimise environmental impact. Environmental assessments informed decisions on accommodation placement, lighting levels and guest movement across the site.

The accommodation units are elevated above ground to preserve natural sand movement, protect native vegetation, and minimise disturbance to wildlife. Lightweight construction materials further reduce intervention in the surrounding landscape, and existing vegetation has been carefully preserved.

Immersive natural experiences

Guests can explore the area through kayaking excursions in the mangroves, birdwatching, and guided experiences along tidal waterways. The retreat also offers opportunities to observe the rich coastal biodiversity, including crabs that play an important ecological role in maintaining soil health and recycling organic matter.

Developed in coordination with EPAA, Kingfisher Retreat reflects Shurooq’s broader approach to sustainable destination development, delivering tourism experiences closely linked to each location's identity and natural heritage.

By prioritising conservation alongside hospitality, the retreat demonstrates how responsible tourism can support environmental protection while offering visitors a unique connection with nature.
