Video challenge technology introduced in volleyball matches

The technology has been implemented during volleyball matches at the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club, with 19 cameras installed around the court to support video review decisions. The system allows referees and teams to review selected decisions using multi-angle replays and high-definition footage, improving accuracy and fairness during matches.

Alignment with international volleyball standards

The introduction of Video Challenge aligns the tournament with international volleyball standards, following official approval from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and refereeing accreditation from the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC). Officials say the move reflects the organising committee’s strategy to modernise competition management and enhance transparency on the court.

Refereeing milestone for AWST eighth edition

International referee and technical supervisor Hamed Al Roussi described the development as a major milestone for the tournament’s eighth edition.

“The use of this technology for the first time at AWST represents a qualitative shift in refereeing standards,” Al Roussi said. “It allows controversial situations to be reviewed with precision, leading to more accurate and objective decisions.”

He added that the early use of the technology has already improved officiating and increased confidence among players and coaching staff. According to Al Roussi, the initiative is also seen as a preparatory step toward the broader adoption of Video Challenge technology in future tournaments, including domestic competitions in the UAE.

How the video challenge system works

Under the system, each team is permitted two challenges per set. If a challenge is successful, the team retains the right to continue using the system. Referees may also request a video review in decisive moments, such as match-ending points, to ensure accuracy.

Video reviews can be used to assess decisions including whether the ball is in or out, net touches, hand contact, screening faults, and back-row violations.
