The event began with an introduction session by Amal Ismail from Irthi's Community Skills Development Department, who outlined the council’s role in preserving Emirati heritage through contemporary approaches.
Amal bin Khatem, also from Irthi's Community Skills Development Department, spoke about the use of palm tree components in making ropes, baskets, and household tools. She highlighted the deep connection between people and the environment in Emirati heritage, as well as the sustainable use of natural resources. She also stressed the importance of documenting traditional knowledge related to palm trees and passing it on to future generations through cultural and craft programmes. She noted that preserving these crafts supports the local creative economy by developing modern products inspired by heritage.
The event included a workshop focused on the art of making recycled paper using natural materials from the local environment, such as palm fronds and dried flowers. Participants learned the key stages of paper recycling and manual production, gaining hands-on experience in integrating natural elements into artistic paper-making. This activity promoted awareness of sustainable crafts and the creative use of local resources.
The event reflects SPL and Irthi’s commitment to promoting Emirati heritage through various activities. It aimed to highlight the palm tree's cultural and literary significance, positioning libraries as active platforms for cultural dissemination and the preservation of national memory.
