Sharjah24: Monaco denied Manchester City a second consecutive victory in the UEFA Champions League by securing a last-minute equaliser from Eric Dier, resulting in a 2-2 draw in the second round of the group stage.

Haaland scores twice for City

Erling Haaland had put City ahead twice, scoring in the 15th and 44th minutes, after Dutchman Jordan Teze equalised the first time with a stunning goal in the 18th minute. City missed the opportunity to clinch a comfortable win when Monaco was awarded a penalty, which Dier successfully converted in the 90th minute.

Points table

As a result, City now has four points following their 2-0 win over Italian champions Napoli in the opening round, while Monaco earned their first points of the competition after suffering a heavy 4-1 loss to Belgium’s Club Brugge.

How the goals were scored

Haaland opened the scoring after Croatian Joško Gvardiol spotted a gap in Monaco’s defence and delivered a perfect high pass, which Haaland expertly controlled before lifting the ball over the German-Swiss goalkeeper Philipp Köhn in the 15th minute. The hosts quickly responded, as Teze fired a powerful shot from outside the penalty area into the top corner just three minutes later. Haaland restored City’s lead just before halftime, heading home a cross from Nicky O’Reilly in the 44th minute.

VAR penalty

Just when it seemed City was on the brink of securing their second victory, a VAR review awarded Monaco a penalty after Nico González raised his foot dangerously against Dier. Dier converted the spot-kick efficiently to level the match in the 90th minute.

Newcastle’s commanding win

In other news, fellow English side Newcastle United celebrated their first win in the competition with a commanding 4-0 victory over Belgium’s Union Saint-Gilloise. The "Magpies" attributed their success to goals from new signing Nick Woltemade (17th minute), Anthony Gordon (43rd and 64th minutes, both from penalties), and Harvey Barnes (81st minute).

Group standings

Newcastle now sits on three points, level with the Belgian club, which had previously defeated Dutch side PSV Eindhoven 3-1 in the first round.
