Sharjah 24 – AFP: Mathieu van der Poel captured his third career Tour de France stage victory on Sunday, crossing the line first in a ninth stage that was heavily modified due to extreme heat. The Dutch rider and former world champion outsprinted his three breakaway companions to secure the win, leaving Tobias Johannessen to take second place and Tom Pidcock to finish third.

Pogacar maintains overall lead

Defending champion Tadej Pogacar finished safely within the chasing peloton just six seconds behind Van der Poel, a result that allowed him to comfortably retain the yellow jersey ahead of Monday’s rest day. In the general classification standings, Pogacar holds a 2-minute and 42-second lead over his main rival Jonas Vingegaard, while Isaac del Toro occupies third place, trailing by an additional 45 seconds.

Route altered Due to extreme weather

The original 154.6km route stretching from Malemort to Ussel was trimmed by approximately 30 kilometers after authorities issued a red weather alert as temperatures climbed toward 40 degrees Celsius. Van der Poel launched his winning move with 25km left on the final climb of the day, forcing a breakaway alongside Johannessen, Baudin, and Pidcock before effortlessly commanding the final sprint to the line.
