Bilic replaces Zlatko Dalic, who stepped down last week after Croatia’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the team failed to reach the Round of 16 following a defeat to Portugal. Dalic leaves behind a successful legacy, including Croatia’s runner-up finish at the 2018 World Cup, a semi-final appearance at the 2022 World Cup, and a Euro 2020 Round of 16 finish.
Experienced manager returns to national team
The 57-year-old Bilic, a former Croatia defender, previously managed the national team from 2006 to 2012. The HNS said he was unanimously appointed after considering his extensive coaching experience.
HNS President Marijan Kustic said succeeding Dalic would not be easy but expressed confidence that Bilic was the right choice for the role.
Bilic has managed several clubs, including English teams West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion and Watford, as well as Saudi Arabian side Al-Fateh during the 2023-2024 season. As a player, he earned 44 international caps for Croatia and represented clubs including Hajduk Split, West Ham and Everton.
Bilic aims for strong Croatia comeback
During his first spell as national coach, Bilic achieved a record of 42 wins, 15 draws and eight defeats in 65 matches. His best tournament result was reaching the Euro 2008 quarter-finals, where Croatia lost to Turkey on penalties.
Bilic said he was excited by the challenge and felt more prepared and experienced than when he first took charge in 2006.
He added that his main objective is to guide Croatia to major success, particularly at the 2028 European Championship.
Modric future remains undecided
Bilic said the decision on whether veteran captain Luka Modric will retire from international football belongs entirely to the midfielder, who turns 41 in September.
He praised Modric’s importance to Croatia, saying the Real Madrid star represents much more than just his footballing ability, and expressed his hope that he continues with the national team.
