Sharjah24: Norwegian striker Erling Haaland led Manchester City to victory in the UEFA Champions League, scoring in their 2-0 win over Spain’s Villarreal in the third round of the group stage.

The victory demonstrated a strong reply from the defending champions, who had been frustrated by a draw in their previous match. Haaland’s early goal set the tone for a commanding performance by Pep Guardiola’s side.

Record-breaking form continues

Haaland opened the scoring in the 17th minute, taking his tally to four goals in three matches of this season’s competition and 53 goals in 51 Champions League appearances overall, a remarkable record for the 24-year-old.

The prolific forward has now scored 15 goals in all competitions for City this season and has hit in 12 consecutive matches for both club and country, amassing a total of 22 goals in that streak.

This match also marked his ninth consecutive game scoring for City, bringing him close to matching his 2022 record of scoring in 10 straight appearances between August and October.

Bernardo Silva seals the win

City captain Bernardo Silva doubled the lead in the 40th minute, securing a comfortable victory and cementing the team’s second win of the group stage after their opening triumph over Napoli (2-0).

The result helped City recover from their disappointing 2-2 draw against Monaco in the previous round, reaffirming their credentials as one of the tournament’s strongest contenders.

The victory sees Manchester City sustain momentum in their pursuit of European glory, as Guardiola’s side keep balancing domestic dominance with continental ambitions.
