Sharjah 24 – AFP: Lionel Messi will lead Argentina into a highly anticipated 2026 World Cup semifinal clash against England, a team he will face for the first time in his international career. The Argentine captain hopes to guide his nation to a third World Cup final appearance.

Messi, who recently recorded his 200th international victory with Argentina during the group stage, continues to play a key role for the national team despite nearing the later stages of his illustrious career. The 39-year-old forward, who made his Argentina debut in 2005, is aiming to add another historic achievement to his legacy.

A difficult start to Messi’s international career

Messi’s first appearance for Argentina came under coach José Pékerman in August 2005 against Hungary. His debut lasted just 90 seconds after he was sent off shortly after coming on as a substitute.

The early dismissal also ruled him out of a friendly match against England later that year, meaning Messi has never previously faced the Three Lions. The upcoming semifinal at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will mark their first meeting on the international stage.

“I’ve played against everyone except England,” Messi said after Argentina’s quarter-final victory, describing the match as a special occasion against a top-level opponent.

Following Maradona’s legacy

The semifinal brings memories of Argentina’s famous 1986 World Cup quarter-final victory over England, when Diego Maradona produced two iconic goals, including the legendary “Hand of God” strike and a historic solo effort.

While Messi has created his own legacy, he enters the match as the leading scorer in World Cup history, with 21 goals in 32 tournament appearances. The Inter Miami star remains focused on helping Argentina reach another final and potentially become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title.
