The award stressed that senior citizens’ participation in voluntary work represents a unique contribution, enriched by knowledge and broad life experiences. Their involvement strengthens social cohesion and reflects the notion that volunteering is a continuous humanitarian mission unrestricted by age.
To recognise these efforts, the award annually honors elderly volunteers with the “Asala Award”, which celebrates their ongoing contributions. This initiative underscores that volunteering is a timeless value that grows richer and more meaningful with the passing of years.
Suad Al Shamsi, Executive Director of the award, said: “We celebrate today our fathers and mothers among the elderly, who are role models in humanitarian giving and a reflection of the deeply rooted values upon which the UAE was built.” She affirmed that the “Asala Award” reflects a commitment to appreciating their contributions and ensuring their active participation in community service, inspiring younger generations to follow their path of generosity.
The “Asala Award” requires participants to demonstrate diverse and consistent voluntary work throughout the year, documented by official certificates from recognised platforms. Supporting materials may include recommendation letters, evaluation forms from institutions, or photos to strengthen the submission.
The award highlighted that this category fosters stronger intergenerational communication, allowing knowledge and skills exchange between seniors and youth, especially in light of rapid technological advancements that contribute to building a cohesive and integrated society.
Al Shamsi added that honoring elderly volunteers represents a message of gratitude and recognition for their continuous giving, as well as a motivation for further initiatives that reinforce volunteer culture and support social development goals in Sharjah and the UAE as a whole.
