Sharjah24: Al Qasimia University, based in Sharjah, has signed a scientific Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Makerere University, one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in Uganda. The agreement, signed at Al Qasimia University’s campus, reflects the shared commitment of both universities to expand international collaboration and academic exchange.
The MoU was signed by Professor Jamal Al Turaifi, President of Al Qasimia University, and Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, in the presence of senior officials from both sides.

Areas of collaboration
The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in scientific, research, and technological fields; organise joint conferences and seminars; exchange participation in academic, cultural, and educational activities; and support the teaching of Arabic to non-native speakers. It also covers collaboration in supervising and discussing postgraduate theses, as well as exchanging scientific articles and academic publications in line with procedures adopted at both institutions.

Shared vision for global education
Professor Jamal Al Turaifi said the agreement reflects Al Qasimia University’s vision to broaden academic partnerships worldwide and promote knowledge in service of communities, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, and Founder of Al Qasimia University. He highlighted that the cooperation will open new opportunities for students and faculty members, particularly in Arabic language teaching, research, and professional training, while supporting joint research projects that contribute to sustainable development.

Makerere’s global outlook
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe expressed pride in partnering with Al Qasimia University, praising its distinguished status in the Islamic and international academic community. He emphasised that the MoU will create valuable opportunities for students and researchers and serve as a vital platform for cooperation in science, technology, and culture.

He noted that Makerere University, founded in 1922 as the first higher education institution in Uganda and East Africa, has played a leading role in shaping African society for over a century. The partnership with Al Qasimia University, he added, will enrich Makerere’s global academic mission and expand its international reach.
