Sharjah 24 – AFP: Russia’s Chief of Staff, Valery Gerasimov, announced on Saturday that Russian forces, aided by North Korean soldiers, had fully regained control of the border Kursk region from Ukrainian forces. This marks the first public acknowledgement of North Korean military involvement in the conflict.

North Korean forces praised for their role

Gerasimov highlighted the “heroism” of North Korean troops, saying they played a crucial role in defeating Ukrainian units in the region. According to Western and South Korean intelligence, over 10,000 North Korean soldiers were sent to Russia in 2024 to support Moscow’s efforts.

Ukraine denies Russian claims

Ukraine quickly rejected Russia’s statement, calling it a “propaganda trick.” While acknowledging that the situation on the ground is difficult, Ukrainian military officials insisted that they still hold positions in parts of Kursk and are conducting operations in nearby Belgorod.

Kursk’s strategic importance

Kyiv had hoped to use territorial gains in Kursk as leverage in future peace negotiations. Russia’s recapture of the region, particularly the village of Gornal, was described by Gerasimov as the final step in securing the area.

Putin celebrates “victory” and signals future moves

During a video meeting, President Vladimir Putin congratulated Russian forces and declared that Ukraine’s offensive in Kursk had “completely failed.” He added that reclaiming Kursk sets the stage for further advances along other parts of the front.

Zelensky seeks ceasefire amid escalation

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the Vatican to discuss a “full and unconditional ceasefire.” The developments in Kursk raise concerns of increased Russian pressure on neighboring Sumy, where recent incursions have already taken place.
