Babak Mahmoudi, head of the Relief and Rescue Organization at the Iranian Red Crescent Society, confirmed the fatalities during a live broadcast on state TV. “Unfortunately, at least four deaths have been confirmed by rescuers,” he said, as emergency services scrambled to contain the aftermath.
The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that the number of injured had reached 281, though local ambulance services later updated the figure to over 500. The wounded were transferred to hospitals across the province, with injuries ranging from mild to critical.
The explosion, which reportedly originated from a gas tanker, caused extensive destruction in the surrounding areas and impacted several industrial facilities in western Bandar Abbas. Video footage circulating online showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the blast site, adding to the urgency of rescue operations.
Rapid response teams from the Red Crescent were immediately dispatched to the scene. While initial reports point to a gas-related incident, the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation by local authorities.
