Sharjah 24 – Reuters: Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone offensive against Ukraine early Saturday, resulting in two deaths and 19 injuries, Ukrainian officials reported. The strikes targeted several major cities—including Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv—unfolding as Ukraine continues to navigate critical shortages of air defense munitions.

Kyiv among hardest-hit areas

In the capital city of Kyiv, 11 people were injured following a combined barrage of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that civilian infrastructure was hit before air raid alerts could even be issued. He noted that while Ukrainian forces intercepted the majority of the incoming targets, they failed to stop the ballistic missiles. According to the Ukraine Air Force, Russia deployed six ballistic missiles, six cruise missiles, and 121 drones; air defenses successfully downed two cruise missiles and 111 drones.

Odesa and Kharkiv also targeted

The assault extended to other major urban centers as well. In the Black Sea port city of Odesa, a missile strike killed two people and left one injured. Meanwhile, a separate drone strike targeting a civilian enterprise in Kharkiv wounded seven individuals.

Ukraine urges faster delivery of air defences

In the wake of the devastating attacks, Zelenskiy renewed his appeals to international allies, urging them to accelerate the delivery of the air defense systems and munitions pledged during this week's NATO summit. Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly warned that diminishing supplies of Patriot interceptor missiles are severely limiting the country's capacity to counter Russian ballistic missile strikes.

On the offensive front, Ukrainian forces reported that they successfully struck multiple Russian fuel and cargo vessels in the Sea of Azov overnight, a move aimed at disrupting Moscow's military supply chains.
