Sharjah24: As part of the second ordinary session of the eleventh legislative term, the Health, Labour and Social Affairs Committee of the Sharjah Consultative Council continued its efforts to assess the healthcare system by conducting a field visit to Khorfakkan Hospital and Khorfakkan Health Centre. The purpose of the visit was to evaluate the standards of care and the range of medical services available to both citizens and residents in Khorfakkan.
Committee members in attendance
The visit took place on the morning of the previous day and was attended by Dr Hind Saleh Al-Hajri, the Committee’s Rapporteur. She was joined by committee members Issa Abdulrahim Al Zarouni, Ali Salem Al Shamsi, Ahmed Salem Humaidi Al Ketbi, Dr Ahmed Saleh Al Naqbi, Abdullah Ali Al Badawi, and Khalfan Saeed Al Musafri. Also present was the Committee Secretary, Sumaya Jassim Mohammed.

Warm welcome from hospital and health centre officials
At Khorfakkan Hospital, the delegation was welcomed by His Excellency Dr Abdullah Al Balushi, the hospital’s director, alongside a number of department heads and administrative managers. At Khorfakkan Health Centre, the committee was received by Ms Aisha Al Qatami, the centre’s director, along with several members of the medical and administrative staff.

Strengthening field engagement with health institutions
These visits reaffirm the Sharjah Consultative Council’s commitment to fostering direct field-level engagement with various health sector institutions. This approach aligns with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. His vision promotes the establishment of an integrated and high-performing healthcare environment that emphasises sustainability and excellence in service delivery across the emirate.

Hospital presentation highlights service development
The visit to Khorfakkan Hospital began with a welcoming speech by Dr Al Balushi, who expressed his pleasure at the committee’s visit. He underscored the importance of such interactions in promoting institutional integration and fostering collaboration among stakeholders in the healthcare field. He noted that this would help in developing operational structures and improving the quality of services.

Dr Al Balushi also delivered a detailed presentation outlining the hospital’s services, operational strategies, and annual statistics. He pointed to a significant increase in the number of patients over the past three years, a reflection of the city’s broader development across urban, economic and tourism sectors. This growth, he said, has been driven by major projects initiated by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, such as the new Khorfakkan Road, and other initiatives aimed at creating a safe, attractive healthcare environment.

Health centre director outlines preventive and therapeutic services
At Khorfakkan Health Centre, Aisha Al Qatami welcomed the visiting delegation and provided an overview of the centre’s preventive and therapeutic healthcare services. She also discussed the importance of fostering community partnerships with federal and local authorities.

Focus on community partnerships and accreditation
The discussions during both visits focused on enhancing community collaboration and the ongoing efforts by the hospital and health centre to roll out initiatives that reflect a strong commitment to public health. These efforts are taking place under the umbrella of Emirates Health Services, with a focus on achieving both local and international accreditations. These certifications are viewed as critical to raising performance standards and aligning with global benchmarks of healthcare excellence.

Committee presents observations and proposals
During their tour of Khorfakkan Hospital and the health centre, the committee members shared their observations and presented several development proposals aimed at improving healthcare services. They stressed the need for regular monitoring and analysis of field data to support evidence-based recommendations for decision-makers. This, they noted, is key to enhancing health-related quality of life and supporting the emirate’s ambitions for a modern and robust healthcare system.

Praise for medical and administrative staff
The committee praised the dedication and professionalism of the medical and administrative staff at both the hospital and health centre. They also commended the noticeable improvements made in infrastructure, service delivery, and overall standards at the two facilities.

Strategic discussions on service quality
In addition, the committee explored a number of strategic topics related to healthcare service quality and development. It highlighted the significance of field and consultative reports in formulating future healthcare policies that respond to public needs and reinforce the emirate’s leadership in this vital sector.

Conclusion: advancing Sharjah’s healthcare vision
The visits concluded with a reaffirmation of the importance of maintaining direct engagement between the public and healthcare providers. The committee stressed that such engagement plays a pivotal role in shaping effective healthcare policies and enhancing operational performance. This commitment is in full alignment with the vision of the Emirate of Sharjah to lead in delivering world-class healthcare services to its citizens and residents.
