Dina Maria, 51, an operations manager from the Netherlands, recounted her life-changing journey with breast cancer, which began in February 2024. She shared how she initially ignored a lump in 2021 but later sought medical advice when her health began deteriorating.
“I began feeling unwell with frequent angina and fatigue, which led me to seek a full checkup. By then, I had stage 3 breast cancer. After completing chemotherapy, I underwent surgery. It feels incredible to be active again,"”she said.
Dina has since become an advocate for self-care and an inspiration to others. “While not always preventable, much of our health is in our hands. Staying active, drinking water, and getting sunlight are crucial. Keep moving and live life fully.”
For Khulood Abu Magdhab, 47, the fight against cancer began in 2019 after she noticed a lump and sought immediate medical attention. “I never thought I could be affected by this illness. When I found the lump, I knew something was wrong. Early detection helped me begin treatment immediately,” she explained.
Khulood credited her family as her unwavering source of strength. “My husband, daughter, and siblings were my strength. Their support gave me the determination to keep going, and today, I’m here to show solidarity with others just like they supported me during my journey.”
For Suna Abu Harm, a 54-year-old breast cancer survivor from Damascus, an early self-examination during the Pink Ribbon campaigns in 2021 led to the discovery of a lump. “Early detection makes a difference,” she said. “If you notice changes in your body, don’t ignore them. Stay strong and never give up.” Suna endured surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation but emerged stronger, determined to inspire others.
Together with hundreds of participants, these brave survivors walked the track at Relay for Life 2025, their steps symbolising the indomitable human spirit. Through their stories, FOCP intends to spark hope and strengthen Sharjah’s and the UAE’s shared commitment to fighting cancer.
Since its inception in 2017, Relay for Life in the UAE has united over 10,000 participants, honoured more than 500 survivors, and lit over 8,500 luminarias, demonstrating the profound strength of community in driving awareness and support for cancer patients.
