Sharjah24: On the second day of the Sharjah Festival of African Literature (SFAL), young artists tried the art of making African pottery at one of the many creative workshops the 4-day festival is hosting.

Jeannine Nyama, an educator from Cameroon led the session that shared the rich traditions of African design with participants aged 7 and above.

Artistic traditions across the African continent

Nyama guided the children, encouraging them to draw inspiration from the diverse artistic traditions across the African continent. “Look at these beautiful patterns,” she exclaimed to the group. “Each line and dot tells a story of our ancestors and these designs have been passed down many generations. Now it's your turn to tell your own story through your pot!”

The workshop provided a creative outlet while serving as a cultural bridge, offering the young participants a deeper appreciation for African art and craftsmanship. Children learned about the significance of pottery in African cultures and how different regions developed unique styles and techniques in their designs. One young participant beamed as she showed off her colorful creation. “I made my pot look like the savanna at sunset,” she explained proudly.

This engaging activity aligns perfectly with the festival’s aim of fostering cultural dialogue between the Arab world and Africa. It is one of twelve interactive sessions designed for young visitors at the Sharjah Festival of African Literature, which is organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), and continues until January 27, 2025, running daily from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM at University City Hall grounds in Sharjah.
