Sharjah24: In line with its pioneering role in showcasing Sharjah’s achievements across diverse sectors, Sharjah Media City (Shams) has launched a series of interviews with leading figures, experts, and officials through its interactive podcast, Hadith Shams. These discussions aim to foster collaboration in the media sector, address pressing challenges in both media and economic fields, and highlight the emirate’s flagship projects and accomplishments.
Among the notable guests on Hadith Shams was Dr. Eng. Khalifa Musabah Al Tunaiji, Chairman of the Department of Agriculture and Livestock and CEO of Sharjah Agricultural and Livestock Production Establishment (Ektifaa). The session delved into key economic and investment themes, as well as Sharjah’s exemplary experience in wheat cultivation, particularly at Mleiha Farms. Dr. Al Tunaiji emphasised the advanced laboratories and innovative techniques used to enhance wheat strains, positioning Sharjah as a leader in food security.

During the discussion, Dr. Al Tunaiji described Mleiha Dairy as an extraordinary success. "This project cannot be summarised in a few minutes; it represents an integrated system within a much larger vision outlined by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and  of Sharjah. His Highness has mapped out a comprehensive framework for sustainable and secure food production. Every phase of this project, from selecting the best cattle breeds to designing the farm and developing nutrient-rich organic feed, is rooted in this vision. The result has been remarkable success and widespread recognition for Mleiha Dairy as a model project."

Dr. Al Tunaiji detailed how the livestock population at Mleiha Farms has grown significantly under His Highness’s guidance. The farm initially started with the importation of 1,150 cows, followed by a second batch of 1,250. A third batch of 1,350 pregnant cows is expected to arrive in February, bringing the total herd size to 4,000. With the natural reproduction of the cattle, the number is projected to reach 8,000 by the end of the year. The farm has the capacity to house 15,000 to 20,000 cows, ensuring that production aligns with the growing market demand. His Highness has also directed the cultivation of organic feed crops and nutrient-rich forage, including corn, adhering to the highest quality standards.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Al Tunaiji shared how his family’s deep-rooted interest in agriculture, particularly palm cultivation in the Sharia area, influenced his path. "His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi has revived Al Dhaid’s Sharia oasis, preserving its legacy," he said. Despite his academic background in engineering, Dr. Al Tunaiji admitted initial hesitation about taking on this new responsibility. However, he credited the unwavering support and mentorship of His Highness for empowering him.

"When His Highness told me to rely on God and assured me of his guidance, I gained the confidence to excel in this field. His wealth of experience in agriculture, spanning over 53 years since his graduation from Cairo University’s Faculty of Agriculture, has provided a solid foundation for many of Sharjah’s achievements in food security. Thanks to his insights, we have been able to shorten timelines and fast-track the implementation of vital projects," Dr. Al Tunaiji concluded.
