Sharjah24: Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the ICCROM Regional Centre in Sharjah will host a ceremony to announce the winning projects of the 4th cycle of the ICCROM-Sharjah Award for Good Practices in the Preservation and Protection of Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region (2023-2024) and the 3rd cycle of the Arab Cultural Heritage Award for the Young.
The event will be held at 9:00 am on Thursday, 28 November, at ICCROM-Sharjah, Centre of International Cultural Heritage Organizations (United Arab Emirates).

The ceremony will celebrate significant Arab practices in cultural heritage preservation and management. A Grand Award will be presented for Good Practices in Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management in the Arab Region. Additionally, two Honorary Awards will be granted: one for Community Engagement and another for Conservation and Innovation, recognizing exceptional projects in these areas.

The ceremony will also highlight the creativity of Arab youth who received the Arab Cultural Heritage Award for the Young, showcasing their talents in drawing, photography, awareness films, and folkloric dance. Additionally, training workshops in arts, photography, and directing will be held for all first, second, and third-place winners in each category of the Arab Cultural Heritage Award for the Young before the ceremony. The Award is the first competition of its kind to honour youth in the Region and their dedication to the arts, heritage, and sustainable development.

During the event, historian and architect Professor Nasser Rabbat, who serves as the Aga Khan Professor of Islamic Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, will be honored for his exceptional contributions to architecture and heritage. His distinguished academic and research career has resulted in numerous important books, articles, studies, and research works.

The ICCROM Regional Centre in Sharjah has recently announced that eighteen projects have reached the final round of the ICCROM-Sharjah Award for Good Practices in the Preservation and Protection of Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region. From 55 nominated projects, the shortlist showcases outstanding entries from the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen.

From outstanding efforts to preserve vital historical architecture and tangible cultural heritage, to careful restoration and consolidation projects aimed at protecting archaeological sites, as well as local initiatives that focus on safeguarding the tangible heritage in the Arab region, these endeavours play a crucial role in maintaining our shared history and cultural legacy.

The award program demonstrates ICCROM-Sharjah's commitment to protecting movable and immovable cultural heritage in the Arab region. It promotes best practices in preserving and safeguarding cultural heritage, facilitates the international exchange of knowledge and experiences in conservation and management, and raises public awareness about the significance of cultural heritage. By showcasing successful projects, the award aims to inspire others and foster a network of professionals dedicated to preserving cultural heritage in the region.
