Sharjah24: Dr. Mohamad Alameddine, Dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Sharjah, underscored Sharjah's pioneering efforts to promote work-life balance through the Wazen initiative, developed by the Health Promotion Department at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA) in Sharjah. Launched in 2019, the initiative is designed to enhance the overall well-being of employees across the emirate, systematically addresses the challenges faced by working-age individuals, particularly those in midlife, by promoting healthier lifestyles, ensuring safer work environments and fostering a positive institutional culture.
Aligned with the UAE's commitment to prioritising human welfare and sustainable development, Wazen's focus spans 12 key areas impacting community health. Wazen’s first survey resulted in the creation of a first-of-its-kind database on the health and fitness of Sharjah’s government employees across 63 entities and departments across the city as well as the eastern and central regions. Alongside assisting informed decision making to improve employee health, the initiative also educates Sharjah’s working professionals on principles of good nutrition, healthy lifestyles, and impact on productivity and work efficiency.

Dr. Alameddine shared these insights during an interactive session titled ‘The Wazen Initiative’, which took place on the first day of the 10th My Health conference at Al Razi Hall, University of Sharjah. Themed ‘Health and Well-being,’ the 2-day conference has convened experts from the region and beyond to discuss the role of health promotion in improving both physical and mental well-being.

In his address, Dr. Alameddine highlighted that the Health Promotion Department signed a strategic partnership with the College of Health Sciences  at the University of Sharjah. Under this partnership, the college has fine-tuned the scientific data for the "Wazen" programme and formed a committee of 15 faculty experts to create questionnaires and study materials, and compile data for the programme’s studies, in collaboration with the Department of Statistics and Community Development (DSCD). This comprehensive approach focuses on creating a healthier workplace environment by promoting physical activity, supporting healthy dietary habits, enhancing community engagement, and safeguarding the well-being of employees, parents and people of determination. Additionally, it aims to reduce workplace risks, prevent accidents, and foster psychological and social well-being both within and outside the work setting.

The Dean also presented significant findings from a survey involving 2,500 employees. The results revealed that 50% of respondents reported an imbalance in their health habits, while 61% admitted to not engaging in regular physical activity. These findings have led to several key recommendations within the programme, including launching awareness campaigns to shift perceptions and behaviours, introducing workplace sports activities, enforcing healthy food policies, and initiating efforts to combat smoking. The programme also encourages the development of startups specialising in healthy food solutions, underscoring a holistic approach to employee well-being.

The 10th edition of the My Health conference, held in strategic partnership with the University of Sharjah, has convened more than 36 prominent healthcare leaders, including doctors, nutritionists, and experts in health, to deliberate the implications of modern technology and lifestyle choices on both the physical and mental health of individuals and communities. The conference stands as a testament to Sharjah’s continued leadership in advancing health promotion and sustainable work environments, offering valuable insights for both regional and global audiences.
