Sharjah 24: Friends for Diabetes, one of the health-supporting associations in the Health Promotion Department of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah, in cooperation with the Emirates Health Services (EHS), organised a training workshop entitled "Basics of Dealing with Diabetic Students at School".
The workshop targeted school nurses participating in the "Superhero" programme, one of Friends for Diabetes’ programmes, aimed at raising community awareness about diabetes.

The workshop included many topics including the rights of diabetic students at school, in addition to defining concepts related to diabetes such as insulin, high and low blood sugar, in addition to a practical definition of injection and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices, food groups and their effect on blood sugar, in addition to counting carbohydrates.

The workshop was presented by a number of health specialists, and attended by Her Excellency Khawla Al Haj, Head of the Friends for Diabetes; Dr. Ilham Al Amiri, Vice President of the Association, in addition to a number of doctors, health educators, and 112 school nurses.

Khawla Al Haj pointed out that organising this workshop comes within the framework of the Association’s efforts to maintain the health of school students and the school community of different age groups, and encourage them to adopt a healthy lifestyle, and reduce their chances of contracting diabetes, in translation of the directives of the wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, President of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah, and in line with the vision of the Emirate of Sharjah and the UAE aimed at developing the health system, leading to building a happy society free of diseases.

Khawla Al Haj stressed the importance of the workshop in improving the way school nurses deal with school students with diabetes, providing them with the necessary expertise in caring for diabetes patients and honing their skills in innovative methods that would protect students from contracting this disease.

Al Haj extended her thanks to EHS, the Ministry of Education and the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) for their continuous cooperation with the association, and their role in providing all the necessary capabilities to launch campaigns and programmes that are not limited to the awareness aspect only, but also include helping diabetes patients and their families and providing them with support in all its aspects.

Dr. Ilham Al Amiri, Vice President of the Friends for Diabetes, explained that the initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to raise awareness of diabetes, and enable students with the disease to obtain their full rights within the school environment.
