Sharjah 24: Dibba Al Hisn Municipality has opened the first model of residential gardens, the first of its kind in the Emirate of Sharjah, with the participation of residents.
This comes in response to the needs of citizens, providing green spaces close to their homes, and promoting a healthy and safe environment for all family members, including children and the elderly, within the framework of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, aimed at creating “a garden in every home.”

The idea for these gardens came after a study conducted by the municipality showed that the internal spaces in homes in Dibba Al Hisn are not sufficient to create gardens. To overcome this challenge, the municipality has identified suitable external areas that are in line with the requirements for creating residential gardens, with the area of each garden estimated at about 70 square metres. This step will help all homes benefit from nearby gardens, which will enhance the quality of life for the residents of the city.

Research indicates that gardens play a vital role in promoting the physical and mental health of children and the elderly. They provide a safe environment for children to play and release their energy, which contributes to developing their motor and social abilities. Gardens also encourage the elderly to practice light sports and enjoy the outdoors, which contributes to improving their general health and reducing stress levels.

His Excellency Talib Abdullah Al Yahyaei, Director of Dibba Al Hisn Municipality, said: “This initiative is part of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to achieve environmental sustainability by planting all available areas and providing green spaces that help improve air quality and reduce temperatures, which contributes to combating climate change.”

Al Yahyaei added, "The initiative aims to achieve happiness and well-being for citizens and residents by providing a healthy and safe environment for children and the elderly. This step reflects the municipality's commitment to raising the quality of life and achieving sustainable development in the city."

Dibba Al Hisn Municipality will launch a large number of residential gardens in the future to meet the needs of residents and families as part of its future vision to make the most of the available spaces to cultivate the entire area and provide gardens for children. This initiative is a valuable addition to neighbourhood gardens, contributing to achieving a comprehensive vision for a healthy and sustainable city.

To ensure sustainability, the municipality has set several requirements for designing residential gardens, including: using local plants that require less water, using a smart irrigation system to achieve water efficiency, a flexible design that allows for easy garden arrangement changes, providing safe and environmentally friendly play areas, shaded seating for families, and allocating small spaces for growing vegetables and fruits to encourage agriculture.

The gardens include signboards that provide information on how to use and maintain the garden, including instructions for use, various environmental information, and tips for residential gardening. Through this initiative, Dibba Al Hisn Municipality seeks to achieve a balance between urban development and environmental conservation, which positively reflects on the quality of life of citizens and enhances their sense of happiness, well-being, and satisfaction.
