Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Summer Blitz Chess Championship will begin, on Sunday, as part of the summer activity programme of Al Thiqah Club for the Disabled, under the theme “Our Holiday is Different”, in cooperation with the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, and under the supervision of the Sharjah Sports Council.
100 players, male and female, representing Al Thiqah Club for the Disabled, Mleiha Club, Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, Ittihad Kalba Club, Al Dhaid Club, Al Hamriyah Club, Al Batayeh Club, Khorfakkan Club for the Disabled, and the Chess and Culture Club for Sharjah Women, are participating in the event. The event aims to discover and determine the levels of new and unclassified talent in the sport of chess, and to develop the spirit of competition among the participants.
His Excellency Dr. Tariq Sultan bin Khadim, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al Thiqah Club for the Disabled, confirmed that chess is one of the new sports included in the club, and has received great demand from its members, indicating that the aim of these participations is to train and develop the mental, physical, social and psychological capabilities of the disabled, and to instill self-confidence for the participants, which prompts them to interact positively towards success and competition, develop creative thinking, and emphasise their ability to play various games, pointing out that the event contributes to a good and positive definition of the benefits and advantages of the game of chess, and to spread it further among the segments of the local community.
