Sociological Association confronts drugs challenges

Sharjah 24: Sociological Association held the “Shadow to Light: Confronting Drugs” seminar that highlighted the challenges and recommendations as part of the convergence of its efforts with the World Drug Day.
The seminar was held on Wednesday in  Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, presented by Professor Abdullah Al Shehhi from the Aounak Centre for Social Rehabilitation at the Community Development Authority (CDA); and Lieutenant Colonel Salem Khamis Al Mazrouei from Sharjah Police General Command (SPGC). The seminar was moderated by Dr. Hala Al Ablam, a member of the Board of Directors of the Sociological Association.

The meeting was attended by His Excellency Imran Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Vice President of the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, and from the Sociological Association, Dr. Ruqaya Al Raisi, President of the Association, Dr. Salah Al Mazrouei, Vice President, Dr. Muhammad Hamdan bin Jarsh, Member of the  Board of Directors and Chairman of the Cultural Committee, Maryam Al Qaseer, Financial Secretary, and Samia Al Balushi, Member of the Board of Directors. 

Lieutenant Colonel Salem Al Mazrouei discussed the security effects of drugs and how they impact the stability of societies, appreciating the UAE slogan, “My family is my greatest wealth,” while Abdullah Al Shehhi addressed the psychological and social angle and treatment and rehabilitation, showing the latest methods that restore hope to addicts.

The seminar tackled several important recommendations, the most important of which was the importance of the role of the recovery counselor in the therapeutic and counseling process for those recovering from addiction, and the integration of roles between governmental and federal institutions, which affects curbing and repelling drug dealers.

Attendees agreed on the importance of raising awareness among families on how to discover and deal with an addict, the importance of all segments of society joining forces to combat drugs, and finally the importance of the role of the family in containing the recovering person and dealing with the challenges they face.
