Sharjah24: In an unprecedented achievement that confirms the efficiency of the facilities and staff of the Emirates Health Services , the medical team at Al Qassimi Heart Center in Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah, affiliated with the EHS, succeeded in implanting the first wire-free dual-chamber permanent pacemaker for a sixty-year-old patient suffering from cardiac electrical weakness and bradycardia. This historic step and new accomplishment add to the record of achievements of Al Qasimi Hospital. This device is the first of its kind to be implanted in the Middle East to treat such cases.
The team of doctors, led by Dr. Mohamed Magdy, Head of the Cardiac Electrophysiology and Physiology Unit at Al Qassimi Hospital, implanted the advanced device using transvenous catheterization through the skin, without surgery as in traditional pacemakers. This minimizes the occurrence of complications associated with the implantation of traditional permanent pacemakers. The innovative device consists of two parts, with the first part being implanted in the right ventricle and the second part in the right atrium. Communication between the two parts is wireless to achieve synchronization between the two heart chambers. The new device is capable of separately pacing the right atrium and the right ventricle, as well as pacing them together in complete harmony. This reflects the commitment of the EHS to achieve progress and excellence in the field of medicine and healthcare, and enhances its position as a leading center for innovative medical uses and advanced medical technology at the local and global levels.
Dr. Aref Al Nouriani, CEO of Al Qassimi Hospital, affirmed that this pioneering achievement on a global level represents a significant step towards enhancing the UAE's position as an international center for medical innovation. The success of the hospitals affiliated with the EHS in performing qualitative operations at both the local and global levels is the result of the institution's efforts to provide the latest international medical devices and technologies, contributing to providing the best possible medical service in line with the institution's vision and strategies aimed at enhancing the medical sector and improving the quality of care provided to patients. This aligns with the national vision 'We Are the Emirates 2031' to enhance the quality of healthcare and achieve the goals of the UAE Centennial 2071.
Dr. Al Nouriani praised the efforts of the team at the Heart Center, stating that the hospital, with the significant support and excellent capabilities provided by the institution, has become a medical and scientific institution among the leading global hospitals that provide healthcare and treatment services according to the highest international standards. It has also become a pioneer in the field of providing practical medical sciences, especially in the field of permanent heart pacemaker technology.
Dr. Mohamed Magdy, Consultant and Head of the Cardiac Electrophysiology and Physiology Department at Al Qassimi Hospital, said, 'We implanted the device through a special entry point in the thigh without any wires and without the need for surgical incisions as in traditional wired pacemakers. The patient left the procedure in stable condition, and he will remain under vital observation and necessary medical care until his discharge from the hospital.' He emphasized the high accuracy and low risks associated with this procedure. Thanks to the use of modern and advanced techniques, our medical team was able to successfully implant the device without any complications, expressing his pride in this achievement, which contributes to improving the quality of life for heart patients in the country.
