Sharjah24: Syrian newcomer Al Thawra basketball team has marked their calendar for a highly anticipated clash against the reigning champions, Jordan's Al-Fuhais team. Scheduled for Monday evening, the finale will be the highlight of the 7th edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), where the Syrian team aims to redeem their earlier loss to the Jordanian team and clinch the coveted AWST title.
Al Thawra's journey to the final was cemented following their decisive victory over Bahrain's Al-Ahli team by a commanding 20-point margin on Friday, ending the game with a score of 85-65, bringing their points tally to 11 during the match on Friday at the Al-Bataeh Club.

The competition format, a round-robin single-league phase featuring seven clubs, is designed to intensify the challenge, with only the top two teams earning the coveted spots in the final match.

In their latest showdown against Bahrain Al-Ahli, the Syrian team demonstrated their formidable prowess and readiness for the final, dominating the scoreboard in the first, second, and fourth quarters. The Bahraini team secured a slight edge in the third quarter, yet it was not enough to deter the Syrian squad's momentum.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Ghaz Al-Shamal SC ignited the competition for third and fourth places in the preliminary basketball competition after securing an 84-73 win against the host team, Sharjah Women's Sports, as part of the penultimate round of the preliminary stage competitions.

In the final match of the day, Saudi Capital squandered the opportunity to end the first half ahead of Kuwait's Al-Fatat with a score of (45-37), after Al-Fatat managed to regain the initiative during the second half and emerged victorious in the match by securing the advantage in the third and fourth quarters ending the game to their 72-68.

Kuwait's victory allowed them to enter into a tie for fourth place with the Saudi team, both holding seven points and trailing by one point behind Bahrain's Al-Ahli, which, despite its loss, maintained third place with eight points, Ghaz Al-Shamal revived its hopes of being present on the final day, hinging on their victory over Al-Fatat on Saturday. Meanwhile, the host team has five points at the bottom of the standings.

Saturday matches will determine the identity of the two teams that will finish the preliminary round in third and fourth place and qualify to compete for the bronze medal on the final day. The schedule includes the match between Ghaz Al-Shamal and Kuwait's Al-Fatat starting at 11 AM, followed by Jordan's Al-Fuhais and UAE's Sharjah in between at one in the afternoon. The final match will see  Bahrain's Al-Ahli meet Saudi's Capital at 3 PM.
